Zacharias Datsios

Research Associate - High Voltage Lab of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

Dr. Zacharias Datsios was born in Kozani, Greece in 1986. He received the Diploma and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Thessaloniki, Greece in 2010 and 2017, respectively. Currently, he is a Research Associate at the High Voltage Laboratory of AUTh and an Adjunct Lecturer at the Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia (TEIWM). He has coauthored over 20 peer-reviewed papers published in international peer reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings. He was presented with the Young Scientist Award at the International Conference of Lightning Protection (ICLP) held in Vienna, Austria, in 2012 and with the 3rd National Award in Metrology by the Scientific Committee of the Hellenic Laboratory Association (HellasLab) in 2018. His research interests include grounding systems, electrical discharges and breakdown, electrical properties of dielectric materials, lightning protection, transients and insulation coordination for power systems.

Impulse response of grounding systems

The accurate estimation of the overvoltages arising at technical installations requires the prediction of the grounding systems response when current is flowing to/ from the surrounding ground. This is a difficult task since the simultaneously occurring physical processes are interdependent and the main influencing factors affect these processes to a different extent. Even though the research progress achieved in recent years is significant, the estimation of the impulse response of grounding systems remains a hot research topic far from being solved. There is a lack of consensus among researchers regarding the mechanisms of the physical phenomena involved and their contribution to the impulse behavior. In this presentation, an overview will be given of the present state of knowledge on the impulse response of grounding systems along with recent advances and future challenges in the field.
