Giorgos Stamoulis


Giorgos Stamoulis was born in Lamia in 1966. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1989. He continued his studies at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was awarded an M.S. (1991) and a Ph.D. (1994). After a year as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa, he worked at Intel Corp. in the CAD tools area for computing and optimizing the power consumption of integrated circuits, initially as an engineer (1995-1996), then as the head of the PowerCAD team (1996-1998), director of the Strategic CAD Laboratories branch in Santa Clara (1998-1999), and responsible for reducing the power of the Pentium M, which was used in the Centrino platform (1999-2001). In 2001, he became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the Technical University of Crete. In 2003, he became an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, and Networks at the University of Thessaly, which was renamed the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2013. In 2009, he became a Professor. From 2003 to 2007, he was Vice President, and from 2007 to 2011, he was President of the Department. From 2013 to 2018, he was President of the newly established Department of Computer Science, and from 2018 to June 2023, he was the Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Thessaly. Since then, he has been an Internal Member of the University of Thessaly's Board of Directors. His research interests focus on computing and optimizing the average and maximum power of integrated circuits, computing and optimizing the maximum voltage drop in the integrated circuit power supply network, low-power design techniques, computing and optimizing the reliability of integrated systems, wireless sensor networks for security, agriculture, and healthcare applications, as well as minimizing energy consumption in electronic systems. He has authored over 230 publications in journals and conferences and holds five patents while having over 2000 citations to his work. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) and the IEEE, and he has participated in the Scientific Committees of many Greek and international conferences.

The First Steps of Integrated Circuit Design

The speech will focus on the construction of the first microprocessors, the technologies developed to address the emerging issues, and their impact on the current state of the integrated circuits industry.
