Symeon Papadopoulos
Dr. Symeon Papadopoulos received his Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the corresponding Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in 2004, while in 2012 he was awarded a Ph.D. from the Department of Informatics of AUTH, having completed his doctoral thesis in the area of Knowledge Discovery from Large-scale Multimedia Data. In between, he completed postgraduate specialization studies in Information and Communication Technologies at the Eindhoven University of Technology (2006) and pursued distance learning studies in Business Administration (MBA) at the Blekinge Institute of Technology (2007-2009).
After a period of work at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of AUTH as a research collaborator (2006-2007), he has been working at the Knowledge, Media, and Social Networks Analysis Laboratory as a collaborating researcher since 2007, as a postdoctoral researcher since 2012, and as a Grade C Researcher since 2019 and Grade B since 2022. He was a founding member of the spin-off company Infalia (2014). He has published more than 40 papers in international journals, >140 in conferences, 14 book chapters, 2 books, and holds 3 international patents. His scholarly work has gathered more than 7000 citations according to Google Scholar. He is a member of IEEE, ACM, and TEE. He is responsible for the MeVer - Media Analysis, Verification, and Retrieval team (mever.gr).
Artificial Intelligence in the Fight Against Disinformation
The lecture will introduce the problem of digital misinformation, with an emphasis on misinformation conducted through images and videos, and will present a series of methods and tools based on Artificial Intelligence that contribute to its combat. Special reference will be made to the research conducted by the Media Analysis, Verification, and Retrieval (MeVer) team within the framework of international collaborations and research projects, as well as the research challenges of this emerging field.
