Tasos Psarras


My name is Tasos Psarras and for the last 10 years I have been designing integrated circuit systems. I am a graduate of the EECE school in Xanthi (2012), and hold a master's degree (2014) and a doctoral degree (2017) from the same school. My PhD thesis on "High-performance Networks-on-Chip" was awarded the "Outstanding Dissertation Award" by the Electronic Design Automation Association (EDAA). I have published 1 book in Springer, 9 papers in IEEE Transactions journals and 10 in IEEE and ACM conferences. I have worked as an Integrated Circuit Design Engineer at Intel, Intracom Telecom and Axelera AI where I still work today.

System-on-Chip Design of Billions of Transistors

Integrated circuits are among the most admirable and complex engineering achievements. Thanks to the decades-long exponential growth of the silicon semiconductor industry, we have moved from simple single-core microprocessors to multi-core, multi-accelerator System-on-Chips (SoCs). SoCs of millions or even billions of transistors are found inside every electronic device today, from laptops and smartphones to cars, televisions and vacuum cleaners. What is the format of a System-on-Chip? How do you design such a complex system from scratch? How is its architecture evolving to serve the new generation of computational intelligence? What does the future hold for silicon? In my speech I will try to give answers to questions like these. I will present the current landscape of the microchip industry, explain how it has shaped historically and where it is predicted to be headed in the near future. Finally, armed with the experience of a start-up designing System-on-Chips of Artificial Intelligence accelerators at the cutting edge of technology, I will present the challenges encountered in an attempt to design such systems from scratch.
